Petrol Price Increased by Rs8 – New Petrol & Diesel Rates from March 1 Announced

In a major development that will directly impact millions of Pakistanis, the federal government has increased the petrol price by Rs8 per litre for the next fortnight, effective from March 1. The latest notification issued by the Petroleum Division confirms a fresh hike in both petrol and high-speed diesel prices.
This decision comes at a time when inflation continues to affect household budgets across the country.
New Petrol and Diesel Prices from March 1
According to the official notification:
- Petrol price increased by Rs8 per litre
- New petrol price: Rs266.17 per litre (previously Rs258.17)
- Diesel price increased by Rs5.16 per litre
- New diesel price: Rs280.86 per litre (previously Rs275.70)
The revised rates are effective immediately from March 1 and will remain applicable for the next fifteen days.
Why This Petrol Price Hike Matters
Petrol is primarily used by commuters who rely on:
- Small cars
- Motorcycles
- Rickshaws
- Two-wheelers
An increase of Rs8 per litre may seem moderate, but for middle-class and lower-middle-class families, this hike significantly increases daily commuting costs. Many households already struggling with rising utility bills and food prices will now feel additional financial pressure.
Daily wage earners and office commuters are expected to face higher monthly fuel expenses, which may further reduce disposable income.
Diesel Price Impact on Inflation
High-speed diesel (HSD) is widely used in:
- Heavy transport vehicles
- Trucks and buses
- Trains
- Agricultural machinery like tractors, tube wells, and threshers
Because diesel powers goods transportation, its price is considered highly inflationary. When diesel prices rise, the cost of transporting vegetables, fruits, and other essential food items also increases.
Experts believe that this Rs5.16 increase in diesel price could lead to:
- Higher vegetable prices
- Increased food costs
- Rising transport fares
- Additional burden on farmers
The agriculture sector, which depends heavily on diesel-powered machinery, may also see increased operational costs.
Public Reaction and Economic Concerns
The fuel price hike has raised concerns among citizens who are already facing inflationary pressures. Transporters may revise fares, and essential goods could become more expensive in the coming days.
With petrol now priced at Rs266.17 per litre and diesel at Rs280.86 per litre, consumers are advised to manage fuel consumption carefully during this fortnight.
Many analysts suggest that global oil market fluctuations and currency exchange rates continue to influence domestic fuel pricing decisions.
